Your decision was the right decision because it was you decision, and it was what you believed to be the right decision. Utilitarianism is of little importance because you chose whether or not to weigh the situation in such a way.
Why should abortion be legal? Rather than trying to justify the moral reasoning behind abortion I will be going over why the antithesis to being pro choice is flawed. This is due to the fact that abortion will remain controversial and for a valid reason, since abortions are unfortunate. However this is still no excuse to make the pro life ideals the law.
Typical pro life arguments consists of the potential of the fetus being aborted, yet there is a lack of same outcry when discussing civilian casualties in wars such as the ones in the middle east. Just how the aborted fetus could be the next “Albert Einstein” tomorrow’s civilian casualty could also hold such potential. This is evident with those such as Malala Yousafzai. One can only assume that this argument is meant to be seen from a utilitarian perspective, to maximize potential. However this only furthers the hypocrisy, by reason of there is a lack outcry on the current prison system in which 68% of inmates return to prison, in cause by the way we handle inmates versus the way Germany handles inmates with a 5% return rate. This being that Germany uses rehabilitation tactics in handling inmates. Diving into more controversial grounds, religion should not play a factor in abolishing the status quo. On the yet also simple grounds that not everyone abides by one religion or even religion at all. However if this is not enough to persuade those within any religious community then one should come to the realization that scriptures such as the Bible were written 3500 years ago. This is during the absence of medical technology to assist in living. Thus why life is of such importance to the scripture.
However let's say in a perhaps not so hypothetical future now that is Trump in office, Abortion is Outlawed. Changing the status quo on abortion in which abortion is legal, must not change. On the simple grounds that outlawing abortion would do no good. If we look into history for insight on such laws we can see that 829,000 illegal abortions occurred in 1967 alone. This is followed by the fact that 200 women died of mishandled illegal abortions a year prior to Roe vs. Wade. although this mortality rate is significantly lower than more familiar causes of deaths such as drunk driving, this is not a buy able excuse to allow history to repeat itself based off opinion. Even a so called “compromise” where abortion is prices are spiked, does more harms than good. Making abortion expensive would also open the door to illegal handling of abortions. Additionally if a woman is unable to obtain an abortion for financial reasoning and refuses to get an illegal abortion, she is forced to care for a child that she isn't capable of caring for and when a woman is put in this position, her education and chances of climbing to a better job through education become unnecessarily slim. This makes it hard for the mother to provide necessities and college money for her child leading to a lesser quality of life and cementing the cycle of poverty. Another “compromise” is to outlaw abortion after the first trimester yet according the CDC 91% of abortions happen within the first trimester anyway and abortions conducted afterwards take place when the mother’s or child’s health is in danger.
So as we can see Outlawing or even tweaks to the status quo done by someone who is pro life is only done out of comfort of the people due to their opinion. Which should not be an excuse to not only compromise quality of life but the health of mothers and children
